What Are You Doing?

September 14, 2020

"And there he went into a cave, and spent the night in that place; and behold, the Word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, 'What are you doing here, Elijah?'"

I do not know how many times I have read this verse in 1 Kings 19, but I do not believe it has ever hit me as it has recently.  Typically when I read this - and when I read it again when he is asked the same exact question a few verses later - I focus on the "here" portion.  What are you doing "HERE"?  Not this time.

Perhaps it has something to do with a couple of other passages at the surface of my reading lately.  They are found in 1 Samuel 10-11 and in James 2.

In the former, King Saul had been declared king; however, his authority was solidified when the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he took action.  In the latter, we are bluntly told that our faith is dead if there are no works borne of it.  It cannot be just a faith that we profess - there has to be action.

So, with that said, I circle back to Mt. Horeb where we find Elijah being questioned by the Lord about what he's doing there.  He had gone from a literal mountaintop experience in the Lord just one chapter earlier to the depths of wanting the Lord to take his life in the wilderness just like that.  Even after being fed by an angel and making it to the mountain of the Lord, his attitude had not risen with his altitude.

"What are you DOING here, Elijah?" (Caps is all me there.)

Maybe you find yourself in an Elijah spot where you are not where you have been with the Lord, and you are trying to get back where you need to be...but your mindset is not climbing with you.  What are you doing?  Speaking faith is gonna do a whole lot to help you, but nowhere near as much as acting on it will.  There is just something about "putting legs on your faith," as one of my former Sunday School teachers, Anita Harris, used to say.

It's time to walk the talk.  What are you DOING?

Father, I want to be doing what You have given me to do, while I wait for Your return.  Help me to not simply speak faith, and then find it lifeless.  I want to show it by my works.  In Jesus' Name. Amen.
