In Pieces

April 22, 2020

She looked around at the faces.  She looked around at the broken pieces.

She looked down...because that is all she knew how to do.

But then she looked up...because the Lifter of her head was in the room.

It is no secret that one of my favorite scenes in the Word takes place in a house in which a woman stepped in and stole the show.

The woman with the alabaster box.

She came in pieces, yet her brokenness made her whole.

She didn't know it, but she was teaching me that the most beautiful worship is through the pieces on the floor - those pieces that I normally attempt to glue together out of pride to make my offering acceptable.

She wasn't aware, but she was showing me that fear of opinions should never stop me from getting to Him by whatever means necessary.  Those opinions that I all too often allow to lock me in a cell...barring me from showing Him what He means to me.

It is easy for us to look at her courage and cheer her on as we read of the fragrance of her worship that filled the whole house.  It is easy for us to embrace her character and stand behind her through the pages in our hands.  What isn't so easy is stepping into her shoes in our own story.

I urge you along with myself to just let go and run into His Presence!  Pieces and places should not hold us back from Him.  When we remember that He is near to the brokenhearted, maybe we can actually expose our vulnerability without fear.  Maybe we can actually face our pride and shame and fill the atmosphere with the scent of our worship.

She was criticized by them, but then she was praised by Him.

Whose opinion really matters to us?

They will never understand the pieces you lay before Him, but He will never forget the humility it took to be broken.

Father, I choose brokenness over pride, because that is what draws You to me.  I choose courage over fear, because I have to be where You are.  I want to bring You a sweet-smelling sacrifice of praise that will please You...even if it's only You.  In Jesus' Name.  Amen.
