He Goes Before Me

It is typical for me to walk behind my husband when we are in public. This isn't because he walks faster than I do, nor because I am inferior in our relationship. No, I just enjoy being led. There is something safe and comforting about being covered, being shielded...being his.

I don't share all of that to be mushy today. What is on my heart is the beautiful thought of the Lord going before me. I think of the pillar of cloud by day and fire by night when He led the children of Israel on their journey to the promised land. I think of the Lord Jesus' simple call to those disciples He found at the sea: "Follow Me."

There is something about being led that gives comfort, protection and peace. I read this morning of when Moses began to hand over the reins to Joshua. He spoke to all Israel, and then he spoke to Joshua in front of Israel very similar words:

"The Lord your God Himself will cross over ahead of you."

"The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."

They were stepping into new territory, land in which they had never lived.

It was a new season.

We are stepping into a new year - a new decade. While there is hope for a better tomorrow than yesterday, there can be fear of the unknown. It's a new season. I encourage you to remember that the Lord leads His people. I urge you to just enjoy being led. Allow the One who is already there to leave distinct footprints for you to follow, knowing that He will not lead you to leave you. Regardless of where you are headed, you will not be there alone.

Do not be afraid, and do not be discouraged. There is something safe and comforting about being covered, being shielded...being His. Lord, go before me, and I will follow.

Father, I love that You lead me. You go before me, and You will be with me regardless of what tomorrow brings. Thank You. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
