Be It Unto Me

"Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word."

As I asked the Lord what to write this morning, the word "surrender" flashed through my heart. There has been a song continually going through my heart, as well, the past few days called "I Surrender." Hmmm...I wonder if maybe the Lord is trying to tell me something.

The conversation between Mary and Gabriel is one of my favorite dialogues in the Word. Her humility. Her honesty. Her surrender.

Sure, everyone now fulfills what she spoke later - "all generations will call me blessed" - but at the time, she faced humiliation, rejection, and even death for being chosen to carry the Lord within her. But she surrendered.

Later on the Son whom she had laid down her "life" for spoke to those who would choose to live for the Lord:

"Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow Me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for Me will save it."

How far are you willing to go? What price are you willing to pay? Jesus let us know that there is a cost to walk with Him. I have to say as the apostle Paul said that everything I have gained in this world I count as loss, because nothing compares to the greatness of knowing Him.

I want to one day meet my Lord and be able to truly say that I have been His handmaid. I want a "be it unto me" attitude when it comes to His will. I want to daily pick up the cross I am chosen to bear, deny myself, and follow my Jesus with wholehearted surrender.

I'm sure that if Mary could speak to us right now, she would reassure us that giving herself to the Lord for His plans was worth every dream she had to lay aside. I encourage you to throw up the white flag today saying, "Lord, not my will, but Yours be done. Be it unto me according to Your Word."

Father, I want my own plans to bow before Yours. I don't want to shrink back in fear of what the calling may cost. I just want You. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
