When He Is Silent

In the book of Amos, the Lord spoke of a famine. It would not be a famine of food or water, but of hearing His Words. From the time that Moses went to Egypt to proclaim deliverance for Israel to the book of Malachi, the Lord had spoken to Israel through prophets. He had sent them time after time to declare His promises and His judgment. But then there was silence.

For 400 years there was no "Thus says the Lord" recorded. Yes, He was still present - as in the miracle of Hanukkah during the Maccabean revolt - but seemingly silent until the moment Gabriel declared to Zacharias that he and Elizabeth would have a son. (A conversation ironically ending with Zacharias' silence.)

There have been seasons of silence in my life. Times when it feels that the heavens have been closed for the day, and I just have to leave a voicemail and wait for Him to get back with me. It hurts, and it causes me to start questioning my end of the conversation. It stirs in me a defeated feeling. I am a "words of affirmation" personality type...so when words are withheld, it affects me deeply.

This I have learned: Stay in His Word and obey what He has said in the past. What He spoke in the light still holds true in the darkness.

It may feel like a famine of hearing His words at times, but His Word is still true. I challenge you to cling to His Word - keep trusting, keep obeying and keep listening. It is after a period of silence that the sound made rings out the loudest. Make sure the volume of everything else is turned down, and keep your ear to the Word. He wants you to know what the Spirit says to the churches.

Father, just because I don't always hear You clearly, it doesn't mean You have stopped the conversation. I trust that every Scripture has come from Your mouth, and I will cling to it. Thank You for Your Word. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
