"A Friend Loves at All Times"

"A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity." Proverbs 17:17

I have a story to tell you about friendship with the Lord. It is when this verse became truly written on my heart, engraved beyond just normal memorization of Scripture.

It happened maybe eleven or twelve years ago, and I remember it like it was yesterday. There was something I felt the Lord had shared with me concerning circumstances in which I had done my utmost to be obedient to Him. Unfortunately, I cannot convey to you all of the ins and outs of the situation (that is kind of what this is about ironically). Regardless of what it was, it was special and it was personal - between me and Him.

Well, I wanted to share it with a close friend, because I was so excited about the apparent revelation from Him. Lesson learned quickly that some things need to remain in the secret place where we hear them. For about two weeks after spilling to someone else what I had felt the Lord had spoken into my heart I could not find Him, hear Him, sense His voice, etc. I felt a silent treatment in the worst possible sense.

Then one day He overwhelmed me with this verse, and in a way that cannot possibly make sense logically - as conversations with Him are realized and understood with our spirits - I felt Him let me know ever so gently that I had betrayed His confidence. It was the feeling of telling one of your best friend's secrets to someone else, and then having to face them afterward. I guess I had never considered the thought of a true "friendship" with Him.

The amazing Friend blew my mind in the fact that He not only scolded me in that moment, but comforted me with His Word - that "a friend loves at all times." He had never stopped loving me in the silence, but He had definitely taught me with it! Lesson learned.

There are times that the Lord speaks to us for us to deliver that message to someone else, but then there are times that it is meant just for us. Maybe it just isn't time for it to be shared yet, but we must learn sensitivity to His Spirit. He is the Best Friend we could ever have...let's do our best to be His, as well. I want Him to be able to trust me with His heart.

Father, thank You for those moments in Your secret place that are just between you and me. It amazes me that the God who created the universe would want to stoop down to whisper to my heat. Help me to guard what You have given. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
