Standing Firm

There are times that you have to take a step forward. Then there are times that you need to retreat. But then there are times that standing firm in your position is right where the Lord wants you.

I was thinking earlier of the stones of remembrance that the Lord instructed the children of Israel to bring up from the Jordan as a memorial of what He did in bringing them across to the promised land. A specific phrase stood out to me concerning the place from which they were to take the stones:

"from the place where the priests' feet stood firm."

I looked back at the chapter before, and it had stated previously of the priests "standing firm" on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan holding the ark of the covenant as Israel passed. It must have been important to note that they didn't just stand - they stood firm. They weren't moved in their purpose. Even if they grew weary, they stayed firm.

Are we not called to be a royal priesthood? Are we not to be carriers of the Word and Presence of God in this world? How is your stance lately?

Perhaps you have gotten off-balance, or maybe you got tired of waiting for God's purpose to be you moved on ahead too soon. Maybe the "burden" became too tiring, and you chose to turn back to where the calling was a little more comfortable. Maybe you are still standing firm, trusting that God will let you know when to proceed as He did with the priests in the Jordan.

Whatever your stance looks like today, I challenge you to take inventory. Just as Israel could not have crossed over without those priests obeying the Lord, there is most likely someone in need of your standing firm in God's purpose. "And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart."

Father, please strengthen me to stand firm in Your purpose and calling on my life. I don't want to be easily moved or shaken. You are the Source of my strength, so I will trust You. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
