What is Required of You?
I remember way back when during those starting-to-college days trying to build a class schedule. The way to start (as I'm sure it still is) was to look at your major and go from there...look at what classes would be required for you to take to get you where you wanted to go. Going further, you even had to look at what was a prerequisite course for some of those classes.
Required. There are things in life that are essential for us to do to be able to take a step forward in certain directions. If that is what we really want, we don't bat an eye at fulfilling it. So, in thinking about living for the Lord - what does He require of us?
"He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?"
Sure, the Word is filled with commandments and laws set by God that teach us how to live for Him, that teach us what pleases Him. But I wonder how many of these would be met in fulfilling these three requirements?
To do justly. To do what is right. To treat people fairly. To not show partiality. To stand and speak for those who can't for themselves.
To love mercy. To not be quick to judge. To lend a hand, whether it is deserved or not. To forgive when forgiveness shouldn't be an option. To pick up those who have fallen.
To walk humbly with your God. To not walk in pride. To not think that life revolves around you. To obey the Lord instantly. To surrender to His Lordship with each step.
Hmmm. I believe that if we could fulfill these requirements, that walking by faith and living in His grace would not only be desirable but beautifully practical. He has shown us what is good - let's concentrate on doing it for Him.
Father, we focus on what is required in this world to achieve certain things. Please help us to focus on what You require of us, as this life is a blink compared to eternity with You. I trust You to give me grace in Christ to fulfill all requirements. In Jesus' Name I pray. Amen.
