Impressed?

April 8, 2019

One of my favorite quotes of all time in essence says that it is amazing what we can accomplish when no one cares who gets the credit.  I have also seen it as saying that there is no limit to the good you can do when you don't care who gets the credit.  Ironically, as I looked up this quote to "quote" it, there were three different people credited with it!  So I thought it fitting to not share who said it.

I had a little mini-breakthrough in my thinking last week.  Well, you may see it as mini anyway...to me it was a pretty big revelation of sorts.  You see, one of my flaws is to make sure I don't look like I have one.  That may sound ridiculous, and I truly often spill all of my flaws out on the table on purpose anyway.  But my nature is to live in a way that has the appearance of impressive.  (See, I spill my weaknesses out before you can point them out to me.)

Getting to the breakthrough...

I was talking with my son and his friends, and they were sharing how one of them sings all of the time.  So I of course commented on how he should use it.  He proceeded to make me aware that it was always loud and off-key.

You may wonder how this could possibly lead to a breakthrough on my end.  Well, over the next couple of days I realized that even when I sing by myself in the car, I am trying my best to make sure it sounds right, making sure I get the harmony along with the radio vocal accurate.  Why?  Couldn't tell you.

After seeing the joy on someone's face as they sing at the top of their lungs without a care of how it sounds, I decided to try it.  Yeah.  Breakthrough happened.

There is a freedom when you aren't living to get credit, when you aren't living for a pat on the pack.  There is such a joy when being impressive isn't the root of what you do.  I dare you today to just live and serve the Lord with no thought to being recognized for it.  Going further, maybe choose to point out others who need to get credit but rarely do.

I dare you to experience the joy of off-key worship.

Father, let there be a search for humility in Your body that puts all of our preconceived ideas of how we are supposed to act and look on the backburner.  You are pleased with pure worship.  You are pleased when we don't do it for it the credit.  Help us, Lord.  In Jesus' Name.  Amen.
