"This is why it is said: 'Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.'"
I read in the book of Jonah this morning, and a statement caught my eye.
"What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God; perhaps your God will consider us, so that we may not perish."
The captain of the ship to Tarshish labeled Jonah as "sleeper" - perhaps because Jonah was the only one not doing anything to help in their extreme circumstances. He had gone down to the bottom of the ship and fallen asleep. He was running from the presence of the Lord and had become so desensitized in his slumber that the storm the Lord sent was terrifying and stirring up everyone around him...just not him.
Have you ever fallen asleep at the wheel? The car keeps moving, yet you have completely stopped controlling the direction it is going. Not only are you in danger, but all who are in the vicinity are now subject to your sleeping state. Take it further...have you ever fallen asleep spiritually? You no longer have that sensitivity to the Lord and the direction He is leading you. You don't have regard for those around you who are affected by your slumber...and you may not even know it. You decided to just go down to the bottom of the ship and lay your head down for a little while...while life kept happening all around you.
While we sleep, people are hurting and in need of our Savior. While we sleep, people are being taken captive by the enemy. While we sleep, souls are dying and going to hell. It's time to wake up and call on our God so that those around us may not perish.
Father, I don't want to sleepwalk through life. I don't want to be lost in slumber - in essence dead to the world - while those around me are in need of You. If I am sleeping, wake me up...and if I start to nod off again, please don't let me. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
