Cry Out

One of David's psalms was also recorded in the account of his life in 2 Samuel. I invite you to join me in learning from it how to handle overwhelming circumstances.

It is written that David spoke the words of this song when the Lord had delivered him from his enemies and Saul. (Interestingly Saul is listed separately - I believe that David chose not to see him as an enemy as Saul had viewed him.) The Psalm begins with praise, as all of our prayers should - even according to the model Jesus taught. The portion, however, that I am drawn to highlight this morning is the next section.

"When the waves of death surrounded me, the floods of ungodliness made me afraid. The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me; the snares of death confronted me. In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried out to my God. He heard my voice from His temple, and my cry entered His ears."

Circumstances were overwhelming him. When you look at David's life from the point that he was anointed and knew the plan and call God had upon him, he had to run, fight, and then run some more. He had enemies.

What is beautiful to me in this passage is that it shows me that David wasn't praising his warrior abilities that the Lord had given him. He wasn't depending on himself when he was surrounded. He cried out to his God. And then what's even more beautiful - his God heard him.

Do we feel the freedom to just yell to God for help when we are overwhelmed? Do we feel ashamed that we need help? Or do we believe that God has given us the strength to handle it, so we shouldn't have to bother Him?

I challenge you to humble yourself and call upon God. It's okay to just let out a desperate cry...He hears.

Father, don't let me try to take care of my overwhelming situations by myself. Perhaps You allow them to let me know how much I need You. I really need You. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
