Search and Rescue

So, this morning the reading of a certain Scripture spawned the pondering of another one, and then another one, and so on...

"The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inner depths of his heart." Proverbs 20:27

This connected in my heart to when Jesus spoke of the eye being the lamp of the body. Also, I began to pray the familiar prayer of asking Him to search me. (Just an FYI, when you ask Him to do this - He will. Get ready to know what He shows you.)

However, what is on my heart to spill over onto this page this morning is the second portion of the "search me" prayer in Psalm 139. The part that requests the Lord to "lead me in the way everlasting" if He finds something within me that offends Him.

(*Just a little tangent thought: we bend over backwards sometimes in attempt to not offend those around us. How much more should we daily make certain that our hearts are not offending Him?)

There is not a request to remove or to wash away the offense in this passage; however, I believe with all of my heart that the entire Word is filled with prayer of repentance and cleansing. I am just intrigued this morning by these words I have quoted and prayed so many times. I see it as Him shining His lamp within me and then reaching out His hand to lead me away from the mess. To show me a better path to follow.

I guess the kicker is this: As we take hold of His hand offered to us, how hard is it to let go of the mess and leave it behind us?

"Search me, O Lord, and know my heart. Test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."

Father, I don't want my ways to offend You. I don't want my heart to be divided in living for You. Help me to allow You to show me what is wrong within me...then to allow You to lead me away from it. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
