The Little Things
"It's the little things." We hear this phrase and attach it to someone's description of how another shows love for them. We understand that it isn't just the grandstand display of affection - the flowers and candy on Valentine's and the extravagant gifts in front of friends on special occasions - that show true love. It is definitely more than that...and somehow less than that. It is truly the little things.
Can we apply this to our walk with the Lord? We may be pretty consistent with the vocal expression of worship when it is time to gather together, but does this expression flow into the daily grind? Personal inventory question: Does my relationship with Him mirror flowers and candy on special occasions?
Jesus talked about His servants being faithful over a few things. In Zechariah it is written, "For who has despised the day of small things?" Paul exhorted the Philippians with the statement, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
Of course, we depend on the Lord's power to do those great things that we cannot do on our own. While I believe that we are to definitely dream big and strive to do the best that we can for the Lord in the time we are given, I think it is imperative that we remember that "great" in His eyes includes all those seemingly insignificant acts of obedience that we would rather ignore.
We can truly do all things through Christ, and that includes those "few things" and those "small things" that we tend to leave for someone else...those things that aren't witnessed by people. Those things that prove our day-to-day love for Him. Want to show genuine love for the Lord? It's the little things.
Father, I don't want to just show huge displays of affection for You. I want to back those times up with the daily obedience and the moment-by-moment love for others that pleases You. I can do all things through Christ...even the little things. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
