When He Waits

A man whom Jesus loved lay sick in his town of Bethany. His sisters sent the message to the Lord; I am sure that they were waiting in hope for the Lord to arrive and save the day. But He was waiting, too.

We are familiar with the story of Lazarus and how the Lord stayed away on purpose, so that there would be belief in Him. It may be easy for us to talk about it from our point of view, but when you're Lazarus and his sisters - the waiting for God's glory is easier said than done.

What stands out to me this morning is this statement that Jesus made when He first received word that Lazarus was sick:

"This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it."

But it did become a sickness unto death, didn't it? I know my Lord not to be a liar in any way, so what does this mean? Well, to me it means that He knew the end of the story, not just the present circumstances.

How do your present circumstances match up with what You believe the Lord has planned for your life? Has your situation ever revealed exact opposite happenings of what the Lord spoke over your life recently? He voiced that Lazarus' sickness was not unto death, then He stayed where He was two more days and let him die. If you were reading this story for the first time, that is not how you would expect it to go considering what He said.

In my experience, when I have felt the Lord speaking something over my life, the immediate circumstances following have the appearance of someone trying to talk me out of all that He has just said. I tend to find myself questioning if it was really the Lord that had dealt with me, wondering why life's stuff all of a sudden seemed to be doing everything to oppose what I received from Him. Is it just me?

If I am not alone in this, I encourage you today to take comfort in the death of Lazarus. That may sound odd, but comfort can come when we recognize that our present has not been overlooked by the Lord. He knows what we are facing and what will come of it. Though He may not jump up and run to us right away, His timing is perfect and is planned in a way that He will be glorified through our situation.

"Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord."

Father, I trust that what You say will be done, but I need help when my life doesn't want to match up with what You have said. Please help me to remain faithful and to wait upon You, because when You wait there is a reason. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
