Cut It Off

When teaching a child to walk, it isn't customary to put obstacles in front of them purposely. We don't place small objects in their paths to trip them up and cause them to fall. So why do we do this to ourselves?

In Ezekiel, the Lord used this wording in speaking of some of the elders of Israel: "Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts, and put before them that which causes them to stumble into iniquity." They were putting obstacles in their own paths, placing before them what led them into iniquity.

Fast forward to Jesus speaking of something similar: "If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the everlasting fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire."

We may read that today and think it sounds a little dramatic. However, Jesus knew the power that sin has if we continue to allow it in our lives. He knew that if we consistently put before us that which causes us to stumble into iniquity, that we would keep stumbling all the way into hell.

What causes us to stumble? What do we allow in our lives that leads us into temptation? I encourage you to search your heart and allow the Lord to show you what needs dealt with in your life. May we each get a little dramatic when it comes to sin - let's put ourselves on the chopping block and cut off what makes us fall.

Father, I don't want anything in my life to consistently lead me astray with my permission. Search my heart and know me, and please help me to cut off the hands, feet, and eyes that would lead me into temptation. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
