"For who hath despised the day of small things?"
Oddly the movie Star Wars just popped in my mind as a good illustration of what the Lord taught in one of His parables. Luke Skywalker must have had a sense within him that he was meant for more than what his life was showing in his younger years living with his aunt and uncle. However, it brought out a discontent in him that revealed itself as immaturity.
His dreams for the future were big, so the smallness of his present seemed to get in the way of them.
Does this ever hit home for you? You know that the Lord has given you a desire - a dream - that is so much bigger than what you see around you right now. I used to work with a dear woman who voiced to me that she wanted to do something "big" for the Lord. She was yearning for a huge assignment from Him, and I remember thinking that all of the things that she thought were small were actually just as important.
Jesus spoke that he who is faithful over a few things will find himself ruler over many. Faithful. Can we be trusted with what we see as small assignments? Or are we like Luke Skywalker pouting over the long distance between our present smallness and the grandeur of our future dreams?
I challenge you to not lose sight of those God-given dreams and desires, but simultaneously to not drop the ball in handling the day-to-day "few things" He may be using to prepare you to get there.
Father, I believe You have given me dreams and desires that are bigger than what I can see, but I long to prove faithful along the way. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
