No Reception

Have you ever attempted to mail something and later received it back with a message on the envelope: “No mail receptacle”? The intended recipient never got the chance to see what you sent them because they were physically unable to receive it. My question today: are you able to receive?

There are those in our lives whom we attempt to pour love into, yet the container of the heart is damaged. They have been broken and hurt from life and are unable to grasp that love again when offered. There are others who may not have been hurt as badly by others, but who cannot see themselves as worthy of love. And because they cannot love themselves, they dare not expect anyone else to love them either.

Perhaps this is you. You push love away in fear of finding out that it isn’t real. You allow the cracks in your container to leak out what one would give you, then find yourself feeling empty…resolving that love must not be meant for you.

The kicker is this: when you cannot receive love, it makes it very difficult to truly give it.

There is no greater love than that a man lay down his life for his friends. It is a love given without expectation of anything in return. Loving another just for the sake of loving them, with the possibility that they may not love you. Perfect love.

If you open only one gift this Christmas, I pray that it is the gift of this love. This kind of love is possible in your life, but only through Jesus. His love isn’t earned, and it heals what has been broken. You cannot run from it, and you cannot stop it. Please, just learn to receive it. Then soon you realize that you cannot help but give it away.

Father, thank You for Your love in Christ given to us and for us. Teach us to receive Your love, and then teach us to give it to others. Truly Your love never fails, and we desperately need it. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
