Rise Up

She stood with a tent peg and hammer in her hand and didn't hesitate to take down the leader of the army coming against Israel. Jael used what she had, and it was enough.

I felt a stirring to share with the youth yesterday about an incident in the book of Judges. It occurred during the time of the judge Deborah, a prophetess of the Lord. She spoke to Barak that the Lord said for him to take 10,000 troops with him, and that the Lord would deliver Sisera - the commander of the enemy army - into his hand. Barak said that he would only go if Deborah went with him. It was made clear that she would go, but that he would not get the glory of victory...that God would sell Sisera into the hand of a woman.

And that is exactly what happened. Sisera attempted to hide in Jael's tent, thinking he was safe after fleeing from the battle. She gave him milk to drink and covered him with a blanket. What wisdom! Perhaps this woman knew that she could not have faced him in hand-to-hand combat and won, so she lulled him to sleep. Then, taking her "weapons" in hand, she drove a tent peg through his temple and into the ground. As Barak came by in search for him, she let him know where his enemy lay defeated.

In Hebrew "Jael" literally refers to a wild goat as in "climbing". The root word means "to ascend." She was presented with the opportunity for victory, and she rose to the challenge. How often do we shrink back in fear, thinking that what we have is not good enough?

I encourage you to rise up, to recognize that you were given a gift that was meant for using - not burying. We are not to sit on our abilities because we think that someone else could do it better. What if the boy with five loaves and two fish held back, because he felt like it wasn't enough to really do anything?

When we offer what we have, there is no limit to what the Lord can do with it. Rise up, child of God, and do what you can. He will handle the rest.

Father, I give You what is in my hand to give, and I trust You to do whatever You want with it. I don't want to shrink back in fear anymore...I want to rise up and do what You have called me to do. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
