Hold Onto It

August 23, 2018

There are certain treasures that we cling to with our memories.  We hold on tight with both hands to certain stories of our families, anecdotes that maybe no one else would appreciate but those involved.  We keep baby books, photo albums, and journals...so that memories are held onto and never lost.

I felt the Lord impress on me strongly to share with the precious middle school age group last night something even more crucial to hold onto and ponder - doing whatever we can to make sure we have this treasure tucked away where we can never lose it.

Mary was a chosen vessel, handpicked to be the mother of the Lord.  One thing about Mary (among many things) that draws me in with intrigue is the way she handled the whirlwind of what happened to her.  On more than one occasion it is noted that "Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart."  She locked away all that was happening concerning her Lord - her Baby - in the core of her being.  She pondered it.  She kept it.

Years later as Jesus was teaching, a woman raised her voice in exclamation of the blessing His mother had in being the one to raise Him.  He marked the blessing of Mary as falling short of the blessing of hearing the Word of God and keeping it.  That blows my mind.  We look at Mary as having the opportunity of a lifetime to hold the Word of God within her, to know Him, to love Him...to keep Him.  We sometimes fail to see that this is exactly what we are called to do ourselves - in a less physical way, of course.

I challenge you to not only hear the Word, but to keep it...to do it.  I encourage you to meditate on the Word, to ponder it.  Heaven and earth will pass away, but the Word of the Lord will remain forever.  I choose to hide His Word in my heart.  I choose to hold onto the treasure that will hold onto me through eternity.

Father, You have given me Your Word in Your Son.  I choose to cling to and memorize, meditate and ponder the Words that You have written for us.  You are my treasure.  In Jesus' Name.  Amen.
