Take the Stand

I have never been privy to a courtroom scene with my own eyes. Judging by what I have seen in movies and on television (no pun intended), there are witnesses who give testimony for or against someone. The outcome of a case can be held in the power of one person's words.

Like I said, my firsthand knowledge in this arena is lacking. However, I am certain that if a case is firmly established by witness testimony, the credibility of the witness must be established, as well. The past choices and character of a witness will be held in the spotlight to determine whether or not he/she can be believed. Though it may not be the witness on trial, he is held under a magnifying glass to prove that his words are true.

We are familiar with using the term "witnessing" when it comes to sharing our faith in Christ with someone and with inviting another to join us in this faith. There is sometimes a fear of this conversation, as we aren't sure what the person may think or do...nor are we always prepared to answer any cross-examination. Perhaps this is why some refuse to take the stand.

I think of John the Baptist, the one sent to "bear witness" to the Light. He was born to sit on the witness stand on Christ's behalf...though he had never met him face to face until the Jordan.

"I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God."

He knew that it wasn't about him, so he consistently pointed to the One of whom he testified. Yet he was grilled with questions concerning who he was. I'm sure those asking wanted to know why they should believe him.

Why should people believe you when you give your testimony? Have you established credibility as a witness of Christ? I challenge you to live in integrity - live in such a way that your life backs up what you speak when you take the stand.

P.S. John the Baptist was empowered to witness by the Holy Spirit. May I never attempt to go it alone.

Father, our faith is on trial daily. May we trust in the power of Your Spirit to give us boldness to testify of who You are. May our lives match up with what we profess. Fill us with Your Spirit, with power from on high...we can't do it on our own. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
