Under the Rug
Have you ever felt convicted about something you have said or done, and you would much rather not deal with it...just gently sweep it under the rug? The thing is, the rug that would hide your mess soon becomes the rug that trips you.
It is human nature to want to hide when you make a mistake; Adam and Eve taught us how to do this. We would rather tuck it away until we figure out the easiest way to make it disappear, forgetting that the Lord can see through the rug.
If your conscience bothers you about something, it isn't your conscience's fault...so don't ignore the conviction. I challenge you to thank God that He doesn't want sin to rule you. Our first thought is to rationalize and justify ourselves, making our case that it was okay. Have you ever tried to argue with the Holy Spirit, and then soon realize that He is holding a mirror to the depths and intentions of your heart? You may fool another person and even yourself, but He is able to be honest with you like no one else can.
This is somewhat personal to me to write today. There are words I would love to take back and choices I would love to un-make. I would love to write that I am perfect and that there is never an issue with conviction in my life. Ha! So, since conviction has climbed into the passenger seat of my car recently, I call it out and process it in front of you. What do we do?
Well, as always we need to go to the Word:
"My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One."
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."
Rather than pick up the broom of self-justification, may we tell the Lord of our mess and ask Him to help us clean the house. His love covers a multitude of sins...it doesn't hide them. Let's learn to just go ahead and be honest with the Lord and ourselves. There is nothing like feeling the weight lifted off when dealing with our mistakes the right way.
Father, if we could be perfect, You would never have had to send Your Son. Thank You for knowing I would mess up, and thank You for loving me enough to tell me. Your grace and mercy absolutely amaze me. I love You, Lord. Search my heart and do whatever it takes to make it completely clean. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
