Clean Hands and a Pure Heart

There is something about "drawing near" to the Lord that is very personal and very special to me. It is definitely one of those things that is between me and Him; however, I do want to share a couple of verses that came together in a beautiful way in front of my eyes recently concerning this concept.

My eyes landed on the verse, "Come near to God, and He will come near to you," a couple of days ago. This is very familiar to us, but this was one of those moments that I knew the Lord was calling me even deeper. I dare you to keep reading after this verse without stopping there at the promise that He will draw near.

"Come near to God and He will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded."

That next part requires more from us than just crawling up in His lap, doesn't it? We are to wash our hands and purify our hearts. We are supposed to be clean enough to get to Him because of the blood of Jesus, so why tell us that we have to do something? A glimpse into Psalms may give some insight:

"Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in His holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god."

So, if I am reading this right, to be able to come as close to the Lord as I desire, there has to be some house-cleaning in my life. I have to be pure. I cannot cling to this world and dare to think that I can bring it nonchalantly into the Holy Place with me. Don't get me wrong, it is true that the veil was torn for us to have access to the Father through the blood of Jesus. But we are strongly delusional and discounting every other Scripture in the Word that requires holiness if we think that we can march up to the Lord, enjoy His nearness while clinging to our iniquity with part of our hearts.

I pray that you long to draw near to God for the sake of getting as close to Him as possible while in this flesh. If this is truly your motive, you will be more than willing to allow His Word to let you know what filth on your hands needs washed will be all too glad to allow Him to search your heart and tell you if there is a part of it that is not fully His.

Being closer is worth being cleaner. I don't want to just be forgiven of my past, but I want to continue to walk with His sanctifying power at work in me. The beautiful irony here is that we often cannot tell what needs to be dealt with for us to come closer until we dare to come closer. I pray you let go of what you need to...He is worth it.

Father, I want to draw nearer and nearer to You. You said that without holiness no one will see You. You said that the pure in heart are blessed because they will see God. I long to see me to purify my heart. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
