There Is a Difference

I went back to school when I was about 26 with a different major than when I previously attended a few years earlier. I remember that I sat in the altar praying before the semester started, and the word that kept coming to my heart to ask the Lord was for Him to "encapsulate" me. I don't think I even knew if that was an actual word, but I knew I sensed that I needed His protection and covering over me.

One class that I was required to take was Theater Appreciation, and I enjoy things like that...anything to do with drama and productions. However, being surrounded by a class full of people who were six to eight years younger than me, I began to see what a lack of the fear of God looked like. Perhaps when I had gone to school a few years prior, I had grown accustomed to the way kids speak to one another. Perhaps I had become desensitized when I was younger to certain filth that easily accompanies immature conversation. Sadly, at this point in time, it wasn't only the youth that joined in with unholy comments, but the teacher.

I had grown closer to the Lord in my time away from school. It was such an uncomfortable feeling to be surrounded by an atmosphere where the Lord was not feared. I began to see why I needed Him to "encapsulate" me...there is a difference between holy and unholy conversation. There is a difference between holy and unholy living. I am in no way saying that I am holy, but I am saying that I want to be.

"Therefore, 'Come out from them and be separate,' says the Lord. 'Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.'"

The priests in the Old Testament were to teach the difference between the holy and the unholy, between the holy and the common. Moses was told not to draw near the burning bush...he had to remove his sandals, because he was standing on holy ground. We cannot just bring whatever we want into a holy lifestyle before the Lord. If what I cling to cannot enter His Presence, then it has to go.

I would rather let go of what would keep me from coming closer to Him than cling to what bars me from the Most Holy Place. There is a difference between holy and common, and I want to be different.

Lord, we are in this world, but we are not to live as if we are of it. People should see a difference between those who are Yours and those who are not. There should be a distinction between the righteous and the unrighteous. Encapsulate us, O God. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
