Plank in the Eye
Am I the only one who struggles with how to respond to and how to unconditionally love someone who is consciously living in sin, while they are professing faith loudly at the same time? I have a feeling that this is not just a battle for me but for all who truly want to love with God’s love while maintaining stance on the Truth of His Word.
With this said, I will share what has landed in my heart this morning. It is a very familiar Scripture that Jesus said concerning how to deal with another’s sin.
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”
We often quote the first half of this, without realizing the full truth that I feel the Lord wanted us to see. I believe the enemy wants us to stay trapped in a mindset of tolerance of sin, so he reminds each of us of the 2x4’s that are sticking out of our eyes. It is difficult for us to speak the truth in love to someone who is walking in sin when all we can see is our own. I get it.
However, I also get this: the last part of this passage contains a lot of power. We can take the plank out of our own eye!!! If we realized the power of integrity, we would better understand the effect we could have in this world. I want to be able to see clearly how to remove a speck from a brother or sister’s eye. I don’t want to resign to leaving them blinded by their sin just because I can’t seem to see clearly myself.
Father, if judgment of another is the root of why I want to be a speck-remover, then Lord keep me from speaking until You correct me. But if love is the true motive, Lord please help me to walk in integrity…help me to be Your hands to wash out the eyes of another to see themselves in Your love. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
