I enjoyed a memory this morning of my children when they were small. My son dealt with some speech issues, so we went through the proper channels to assist him in this. My daughter, who is two and a half years younger than he, also struggled with some of the same impediments. Something interesting was relayed to me, and I watched it unfold in front of me. The speech authority let me know that as he corrected mistakes in his speaking, that she would follow suit. It happened! She corrected herself by listening to her brother.
I pondered this for a moment and thought of how the Lord so gently uses the same method with us sometimes. He places people in our lives to model for us behavior that we should emulate. We are able to witness others who have perhaps made the mistakes that we are in the middle of dealing with, and so watch how the Lord has worked in their lives to make it right. Conversely, we must be mindful of relationships that should not be in our lives…as we absorb bad behavior as well as good.
I am very visual in nature, so of course a movie clip is coming to mind that illustrates this perfectly to me. The movie Spirit, about a horse that goes on a trying journey (one of my favorites by the way), has a part in it that displays this method of teaching so beautifully. The man is trying to train and calm this wild-hearted horse to no avail until he ties the horse to another horse. He allows the teaching to come from watching another with similar strengths and weaknesses. It worked perfectly.
I challenge you to look around at the people the Lord has allowed to be in your life. Perhaps His desire is to teach you something through them…or to teach them something through you.
While it is great to learn from your own mistakes, it is absolute wisdom to learn from someone else’s.
Father, I want to listen to hear Your voice speaking in whatever way You choose. May our eyes be open to see what You would teach us through another, and may we be mindful that You are able to use our lives to teach another. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
