Salty Conversation

May 30, 2018

"Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt,

so that you may know how to answer everyone."

I kept having flashbacks from my little girl years this morning, and I deduced that maybe the Lord wanted me to draw from a past story to convey a particular message.  I love how He takes something from my life and teaches me more than I realized could be taught from it.

What I am remembering is a moment at my grandmother’s house when I was maybe six or seven.  I was talking with my aunt who was like eleven or twelve at the time, and we were discussing something about heaven and hell.  If I remember correctly, the conversation was predominantly about hell…because I remember being so worried about going there.  I remember her saying that if you aren’t saved, that’s where you go.  (Don’t you love the brutal honesty of children?)  Well, of course I had no clue what being saved meant; I only knew that I hoped I would be one day.

I wonder if this conversation inadvertently placed my feet on a path toward salvation.  I have shared before how the Lord uses different types of circumstances to reach me, so I believe that He knew a conversation with someone I trusted would make salvation personal to me.

I would rather we run to heaven rather than run from hell, but I know that different people are won in different ways.  Perhaps before some can fall in love with the God who loves us, they must become aware of what separation from Him entails.

I am thankful for this memory of my fear of eternity in hell.  Maybe I had forgotten how crucial this mark on my journey actually was.  May we never discredit the conversations we have with others about eternity.  Though they may not immediately surrender to Christ, it is possible that their feet are being led onto the path in that direction.  One sows, and another waters…but God gives the increase.

Father, it isn’t about being in a proper setting to win another to Christ.  It isn’t about others knowing that we were the ones sharing Your gospel with them; it is about their salvation.  Please help us to recognize that it could be our daily conversations that draw others to You.  In Jesus’ Name.  Amen.
