Integrity - from the Pit to Potiphar

Back to Joseph...

I mentioned the other day how the favor that was given to Joseph in his early years by his father didn't carry him all the way to the greatness he had foreseen. While it is true that he didn't float on a cloud of favor to the point of watching his dreams come true with no hindrances, there was in fact a certain favor that did rest on him throughout each mounting obstacle he faced: the favor of the Lord.

At seventeen years of age, the garment he had been given was ripped from him and dipped in blood to deceive his father into believing him dead. Joseph was then sold to Ishmaelites...and then sold to an Egyptian captain, Potiphar.

What leaps off of the pages to me are these phrases that seem to be on repeat in Joseph's life (and that I pray are on repeat in mine): "The Lord was with Joseph..." and "...whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper." He had every opportunity to shut down and refuse to face life with a good attitude. We would have completely understood if he had halfway done his work in Potiphar's house, because we know that he didn't deserve to be there. But thankfully, that is not at all what happened.

He prospered. He was a slave! The evidence of God's Presence in his life was obvious to Potiphar, to the point that Joseph handled everything that belonged to his master. The Word even states that Potiphar, "did not know what he had, except for the bread which he ate." It is very apparent that Joseph lived out the Scripture "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." Integrity and excellence in the hand of the Lord opened the door for a slave to be an overseer.

Of course, the story takes a violent turn at the hand of Potiphar's wife, but what remains true is this: the blamed was blameless.

Does my attitude mirror that of Joseph? Am I willing and eager to serve God wholeheartedly, no matter where I find myself planted at the time? The Lord blessed Potiphar for Joseph's sake. Do those around me feel the overflow of the Lord's Presence in my life?

Father, I long to walk in the integrity and spirit of excellence that Joseph did...that Daniel did. Each of these men served You within kingdoms that did not. I am in this world, but not of it. Help me to live like it. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
