True Rest

"This is what the LORD says: 'Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.'"

There is something about true rest than can elude us when we are trying to merely find it with this world's means. When we attempt to simply relax our bodies by being as still as we possibly can, our minds are able to tire us even more. When we attempt to clear our minds, we may indeed find a relaxed state than can energize us...until the next task is set before us.

There is, however, a rest that supersedes anything we can accomplish by closing our eyes and lying down for a little while. It is a soul-rest. Jeremiah's writing above reminds me of the words of Jesus in Matthew 11 when He taught how to find this kind of rest: "Come unto Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."

We are to stand at each set of crossroads and look. Then we are to ask for the ancient paths and ask where the good way is.

May I offer a suggestion as to what the ancient path may be? Hebrew 11 states that the "ancients" were commended for their faith. The ancient path in my perspective is one that is taken by faith. I daresay that the good way is the only Way to true rest. The good way is Jesus Himself.

The key then after we ask for the ancient path and the good way is this: to walk in it. Coming to Jesus by faith places us on the right path, but then we must choose to take up His yoke. We must choose to walk in walk with Him on this path He provided. Then, and only then, will we find rest for our souls.

Father, I want Your rest that refreshes and restores and renews me from the inside out. My soul truly finds rest in You alone. I choose to come to You and walk Your road with You, knowing that You are carrying the weight as long as I am yoked with You. Thank You, Lord. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
