In reading to my kids the other night, we breached the portion of King Solomon's story in which he finished building the glorious temple (it took him like seven and a half years, by the way). There are so many details listed, to the point that it is a little overwhelming at times. I used to wonder why we were told all of the minute descriptions of each portion of the house of God. As I talked it over with the kids, something hit me: the plans are His.
David had let Solomon know the plans that the Lord had given him for the building of the temple. It wasn't left to Solomon to decide for himself what he wanted to build and how he wanted to build it. It made me think of Moses, when he received from the Lord the plans for the building of the Tabernacle in the wilderness. The book of Hebrews lets us know that he was given specific instructions because what was to be made was a copy of the Tabernacle which is in heaven. Whoa!
These guys didn't just think something up and start working on it to the best of their ability. They were given exact plans from the hands of the One who would dwell there. As I relayed to my kids, I say to you: when you want to build a house, you have the plans drawn up the way YOU want them to be. It is your house, so the builders should do what you want, right? It isn't an option for them to just start adding a room here and an extra couple of cabinets there. It is your house; the plans are yours!
Why do we think that we can do life the way we want? We were bought at a price, and we are not our own. We don't get to pick up a hammer and start building our lives the way it seems best to us. Are we not the temple of the Holy Spirit? Do not our lives belong to the One who redeemed us? He has a perfect detailed plan...it is our responsibility to find out what it is and then align ourselves accordingly.
"Many are the plans of a man's heart, but it is the Lord purpose that prevails." Let's ask Him for the blueprints and follow His lead. He knows the plans that He has for us. I want to know, too.
Father, You are the glorious Architect. Your plans and Your designs are perfect. Help us to listen to You and not to build our lives around our own plans. Not my will, but Yours be done. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
