Dealing with Hurt

When I was about twelve or thirteen the tentacle of a jellyfish which had detached from its owner found itself wrapped around my ankle. Needless to say I ran inside frantically looking for help in making my ankle feel better, but my sweet grandmother was attending to my little cousins who were taking a nap. She quickly let me know to be quiet. It wasn't that she was ignoring my need to take care of theirs, but that wisdom needed to be used to deal with it.

There is a very familiar Scripture on my heart this morning. I pray the Lord speaks to us freshly through His Word:

“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Our hurts have the tendency to cause still waters to rage. There is a restlessness that stirs in our souls, and all we can focus on is finding a solution...finding something to stop the pain. Some turn to substances, other people, food, etc. in hopes of finding rest. However, our efforts to look for healing in this world not only leaves us more restless...but causes a restlessness in those around us. The raging storm inside us can cause the waves to crash on someone else, as well.

Are we just supposed to live in pain? Just deal with it on our own? No. We need to take it directly to the only One who can bring healing. Prayer isn't hiding our pain from others, it is uncovering it before the One who can actually help us deal with it correctly first.

I urge you to bring every hurt to Jesus and find rest for your soul. Pain causes the waves to roar, but we know the One who can truly speak peace.

Lord, it is human tendency to try and numb our pain with temporary fixes. I want true and deep healing that only You provide. I come to You. I choose to take Your yoke and learn from You. Thank You for rest. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
