"How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, 'Your God reigns!'"
There is something about good news that encourages and stirs us to joy. The Scripture above goes so far as to say that even the feet of the one who brings good news are beautiful. I have heard since I was a child that the gospel of Jesus Christ is the good news. So, we come to the next portion of the armor we have been given...
We are to not only gird about our waist with His truth, and guard our hearts with His righteousness...we are to slip our feet into a certain pair of shoes. The preparation of the gospel of peace. We are to walk around covering our feet in the readiness to tell the good news. We are to march daily, prepared each step of the way to share the gospel of our Lord.
There is a beautiful irony here to me. We are clothing ourselves in armor because we live in constant warfare, yet our shoes have everything to do with peace. From man's perspective this cannot make sense, as we have a tendency to want to fight fire with fire. The best way to try and find the Lord's way of doing things, however, is to remember that it is not going to be our way of doing things. He conquers depression with joy. He conquers fear with faith. He conquers war with peace.
One of my favorite go-to verses is found in Romans 16:20.
"The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet...."
I love how it didn't refer to the Lord as the God of war, the God of battle, etc. His peace is what crushes my enemy under MY feet. It is not in anxiety that I can walk confidently proclaiming His gospel. It is not in anger that I can share joyfully His good news. His peace covers my steps, preparing me to bring good news, proclaim peace and announce that salvation is possible. That salvation is available.
We have been given the footwear that can walk through any storm, and we are to be ready at all times to give an answer for this hope we have. Those we meet need to encounter "beautiful feet," let's be ready to give good news.
Father, I don't want to be more concerned with if my shoes match my clothes than if I am wearing the shoes of readiness to proclaim Your good news. I want Your peace to order and protect my steps, so that each step crushes Satan underfoot. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
