Fallen

March 22, 2018

This is a topic that I would much rather walk around and avoid altogether, but it is one that needs to be encountered.  There is something so disheartening when there is a fallen hero.  When one who is held in high esteem shows character that causes their pedestal to topple...what do we do then?

You have heard the phrase, "The bigger they are, the harder they fall."  What I see from my perspective, when it comes to spiritual leaders:  The bigger they are, the more that are affected by their fall.  Think about it.  If you were in war, you would choose to take out the leader.  When the head goes down, what happens to the body?

The kids and I are starting to dive into the stories of the kings of Israel and Judah.  I warned them that there is so much drama when these stories unfold.  As we started reading I had to fill them in on backstory of David, how his fall affected his family.  Yes, his sin was forgiven, but the consequences were evident years after the fact.  Soon we will be reading of the wise king Solomon...but then I will have to share with them how his heart turned from the Lord because of his wives.

I want to show them people who made it.  People who were heroes of the faith without faltering.  I thank God for Billy Graham's life.  I thank God for someone who loved the Lord to the end.  I thank God for men and women like him who cause you to step back and say, "I want to live like that."

It breaks my heart to hear of fallen Christians.  But it really breaks my heart that this is how they are seen from then on...the sin is what stands out to us.  Furthermore, what cuts me to the core is when I hear of one who not only fell, but turned away from the Lord.  To see one who was running the race, yet decided to pull out before reaching the finish line.

I say all of this to say:  Pray for leaders.  Pray for each other.  Pray that temptation will not win.  Pray that if there is a fall, that one who is spiritual will help them up to keep going.  Pray for finishers.

Father, this is war, and we see some fall at times.  Help us all to get up when we find ourselves face-planted on the ground.  Help us to restore those who have fallen.  I pray for the Body of Christ.  Please help us to cross the finish line.  In Jesus' Name.  Amen.
