Surprise!

March 14, 2018

As I was driving home from work yesterday, I came upon a vehicle with a right turn signal blinking.  So of course, I assumed it was about to turn right.  Because I assumed this, I didn't slow down too much...thinking the car would be out of my path soon.  Well, the vehicle wasn't turning.  Thankfully, my brakes responded to my newfound knowledge that this driver was actually planning on turning left, not right.  His signal had thrown me for a loop, yet it brought my attention to the fact that assumptions and plans can get us into trouble.

Sometimes life hides behind furniture waiting for us to walk through the door, then jumps out yelling, "Surprise!"  Who we are is often defined by our response in these situations.

"Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails."

What is your response when circumstances don't line up the way you pictured them in your head?  How do you cope when other people didn't get the memo of what you wanted to happen today?  Do you pitch a fit, throwing an adult tantrum in effort to bend others to your will?  Or do you back up and punt...realizing that everything isn't about you and your plans?

I think the Lord encourages me to dream and ponder of a perfect plan coming together, yet I believe He also wants me to be ready to please Him with my response to the unexpected.  And sometimes I feel that those interruptions are the plan all along.  I need to be shaken out of default autopilot mode to see my true character...thank God for wrong turn signals.

Father, I don't want to live according to my plan, but according to Yours.  I don't want to get so set in my ways that I forget how much higher and better Your ways are.  Help me to respond to life's surprises in the way that pleases You.  I trust You.  In Jesus' Name.  Amen.
