If I walked up to you with a handful of rocks and noticed that you were holding a handful of diamonds, and I proceeded to ask if you wanted to trade...would you even acknowledge me? We typically only trade evenly. We find out what things are worth and base our negotiations on this knowledge.
Then there's God. There is no even trade with Him. How can we possibly lay what we have on the table and dare to do a deal with Him? We can't. We can follow all of the rules to the letter, yet we still don't measure up to His glory. What can we bring to the relationship that can in any way compare to what He brings?
"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh."
How amazing is our Savior! How awesome is our Lord! He knows that we cannot bring anything to the table, so He brings it for us. He takes my handful of rocks (my heart of stone) and gives me something priceless. He takes my shame and gives me a new name. He takes my ashes and gives me beauty. He takes my sadness and gives me joy. He takes my sin and gives me His life.
I think of Jesus going to the cross willingly. I think of Him looking at the penalty and purchase price for my soul, knowing that I wouldn't be able to pay it, and saying to me, "Wanna trade?"
I challenge you to humble yourself and recognize that you cannot offer Him enough to try and do a deal with Him. There is no even trade, only overwhelming grace.
Father, I know that even the best I have to give You could never match what You offer me. So I choose to receive Your love. I choose to receive Your grace. I choose to tell others of the amazing grace I was given. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
