The Power of Staying

I confess that I am an avid Hallmark movie watcher (when I have a free preview of the channel). I actually watched a Christmas movie last night, because I am yet to finish all of those that I recorded during the holiday season. Being the analytical nerd that I am, I pondered about why so many women are drawn to these films. They each capture the euphoria of the beginning stages of love.

here is something so powerful about that initial butterflies-in-the-stomach feeling. I can easily remember the way I felt when I first fell in love with my husband, and I am so blessed to be able to say that he is the only Valentine I have ever had. However, despite the warm fuzzies that get stirred thinking of 20 years ago, I want to talk about those that are awakened every day that I get to love him again.

While the beginning head-over-heels season is hard to match and is what is capitalized on, it cannot touch the power of staying. So many love stories are cut short because the newness wears off; this breaks my heart. Sure there are obstacles to overcome and growing pains to deal with, but there is a sweeter love on the other side with which the butterflies cannot compete.

Feel free to read between the lines and apply the love story to your walk with the Lord. Think of when you first fell in love with Him. Take note of when you learned that “feeling” couldn’t be the basis of the relationship. That doesn’t mean you jump ship, but that you anchor down and hold on through whatever life brings. You just stay.

True love looks at the cross and decides to stay. True love looks at the storm and decides to stay. Come what may…there is power in staying.

Father, You have never left me nor forsaken me. So how could I ever turn away from You? I am so thankful for my husband, for everything we have been through together. Thank You for teaching me about Your love through him. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
