Come Forth!

February 13, 2018

You waited a couple of days.  You could have stopped every pain, eased every discomfort, and lifted me out of my misery at any time.  But You waited.  You waited until the pain overtook me.  You waited until the sickness claimed me.  You didn’t even come to say goodbye.

I am not going to pretend to understand Your ways.  I had to walk through the valley of the shadow of death, and now dwell in the darkness of the tomb—where are You?  We reached the breaking point of hope, and we watched it break.  Where are You?

-          Lazarus

There are those times that we feel that the Lord has forgotten us.  There are seasons that we feel we are lying helpless, yet He is holding back and waiting a little longer to come to our rescue.  Yes, He could come riding in on a white horse (one day He will) and sweep us out of our pain and misery.  Yes, He could reach down into our trial and change our circumstances completely.  Sometimes He waits.

We are on a need-to-know basis.  We don’t need to know why He does what He does when He does it.  If we could explain His ways so effortlessly, we would have Him figured out and could predict what He will do next time.  I don’t want to worship a God I can explain!  His ways have always been higher…and they will keep being out of my reach.  Praise God!  If I have to spend some time in a tomb to learn that He is the resurrection and the life, so be it.  If I have to wait and watch a promise unfold from eternity just so I can learn to worship the Promiser more than the promise, so be it.

All I know is that when He yelled for Lazarus to come forth, he came forth.  When He speaks to my situation, my situation will listen.  That is all I need to know, and He is all I need to worship.

Father, I trust You.  I know that Your ways and Your will transcend what I can comprehend.  Do whatever You want with me, and please give me the grace to trust that You know best.  In Jesus’ Name.  Amen.
