Good News

January 11, 2018

Due to circumstances, my eyes are filled with headlines and images from news media on a daily basis.  There are times I scroll down and scan over what stands out to me.  I am soon reminded why I do not enjoy reading or watching the news that is presented to us.  There is the occasional encouraging and inspirational story…but it is usually surrounded and overwhelmed by biased, negative media.

I remember being taught when I was young that reporters’ jobs were to present objective fact.  It seems that today the reporter’s job is to shape public opinion by his/her own.  To present only what they want people to believe.  Sadly, I end up becoming angry—not so much because of what they want me to be angry about—but for the simple fact that they are trying to convince me to be angry.

Regardless of its publication for the world to see, men vs women issues do happen.  Race issues do happen.  Famous people and politicians make mistakes.  I get it; there is a lot of negative going on in the world.  But here is a suggestion:  let’s infuse the negative that is actually happening with hope that better is possible.  Chewing on a bitter root doesn’t make it sweet.  Mulling over bad news doesn’t change the headlines.  This is not intended to be a complaint, but a challenge.  This is not a suggestion to live in a delusional world, oblivious to everything that is happening.  It is a dare to influence your world.

We are to be salt and light.  If we allow the darkness around us to cause our lights to grow dim, what good are we?  If we allow the consistent moral decline to cause our saltiness to follow suit, what good are we?  We are to be reporters of the Good News!!  We are to be heralding that peace doesn’t come from this world, but He came to this world.  We are to be proclaiming that eternal life doesn’t happen by obsessing over our bodies, but by presenting them as living sacrifices.  We are to offer headlines of hope, that Jesus came and is coming again.

There is enough darkness without Christians joining the negative parade.  Let’s shine the light.

Lord, I don’t want to turn my head and ignore all that is going on, but I also don’t want it to continually bog me down and keep me from looking up to You.  Our redemption is drawing near; help us to lift everyone’s eyes up to look for You.  In Jesus’ Name.  Amen.
