Lamb of God

Did they realize days after Your birth, at the point of confirming the covenant God made with Abraham, the power that Your blood held? Did they grasp each time you perhaps scraped Your knee as a child what wounds upon Your flesh would one day accomplish? Did they understand that it would be Your blood that alone had the power to save them?

The life-giving, past-cleansing, purifying blood of the spotless Lamb of God. The Lamb who was slain from the foundation of the world…whose birth we celebrate, and whose death we proclaim…the Lamb came to take away the sin of the world.

What is resounding in my heart this morning is just to fixate on the blood of Jesus. To meditate, ponder, and dare to try and wrap my mind around the power of His blood. At the first Passover, the blood of a lamb applied to the doorposts and lintel of the house had the power to protect and cover those who dwelt therein…in essence to give them life. Is the blood of the Lamb applied to the doorpost of your life? Have you taken part in His sacrifice and allowed your filth to be washed in His innocence?

Is it easy for the world to celebrate the Baby in the manger because no one wants to envision this Infant as being the sacrifice for our sin? Perhaps it is less threatening to the lifestyle people are accustomed to if they simply use a nativity scene to decorate without actually applying the blood of the One in the manger to the heart. I guess it seems less intrusive into our own little world to sing Christmas carols of a holy Baby, and still try to contain His Lordship to the stable. He is not a Baby anymore.

I say as John said that day, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” O Lord, may Your blood continually cover me. There is no greater gift this Christmas than to see my sins being washed away in a crimson stream.
