I was watching a movie about the birth of Christ recently, and I was reminded of how intricately the Lord maneuvered the whole situation.
Caesar may have thought that this census was his idea...
Think about it. The Lord had to be born in Bethlehem, but the chosen mother lived in Nazareth...in Galilee. So of course the Lord, in His beautiful sovereignty, chose a man from David’s lineage who also dwelt in Galilee to be betrothed to her.
Then this man would have to travel to Bethlehem to register for the census. Fullness of her time dawned as an influx of people were in this small town, so of course there was no room for them. To a stable, a dark and cold cave, they went.
Then the only ones personally invited, the shepherds, came to be eyewitnesses—in a place where they would feel at home. Shepherds to see the Lamb, the sacrifice born in a stable.
This is the Baby who lay in a manger, that was inside a cave, that was in Bethlehem, where Joseph and Mary had to register for a census, that was issued by Caesar Augustus...who was ruled by God Almighty.
This is the plan that God built.
Father, it amazes me how we can look back and see Your hand at work in circumstances that seemed to be against Your will. Help us to trust You in everything. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
