Just One

November 23, 2017

“Were there not ten cleansed?  But where are the nine?”

I imagine that we are all guilty of this.  We allow another to give thanks in our place, to convey what we want to say on our behalf…or maybe to convey what we haven’t been mindful enough to think of actually.

“Tell them I said thank you.”  I know I have said that.  Did the nine other former lepers dare to even say this?  Were they inwardly grateful for their healing, hoping that one of them returning would be sufficient?  There is no evidence of gratitude whatsoever.  There is no proof that they ever intended to give God glory for what had happened in their lives.

They are remembered by their thanklessness more than by their disease.  They stood afar off due to uncleanness, yet remained afar off due to ungratefulness.

Am I so different?  How quickly do I move along with life, forgetting to thank God for answers to prayer?  How dare I judge these nine!  How often have I causally said thank You when the prayer offered beforehand was one of absolute desperation?!  Moreover, how often have I just kept going without a glance back at the One who heard me…and healed me?

Just one returned to glorify God.  Just one came nearer to Him than he could have in his former condition.  So just one was able to hear His voice speaking just to him.  Just one.

Lord, I know that You said the shepherd would leave the ninety-nine to search for the one who is lost.  Just one.  You care about just one.  Lord, if there is only one that will worship You always, that will constantly give thanks in everything…I want to be that one.  I don’t want to wait for all to seemingly give approval before I run and fall on my face before You.  Thank You for everything, in everything.  In Jesus’ Name.  Amen.
