I would instinctively choose to look down as we cross this bridge, making sure that each of my footsteps is landing on a secure board…but I cannot take my eyes off of You. I would instinctively hold onto the rails to feel more supported…but I cannot let go of Your hand.
I had never travelled this way before, yet my heart knows that wherever You lead I have to follow. What lies before me is veiled in uncertainty, yet I know that I truly want to be there—just because You will be there.
This path seems to grow all the more narrow the further we walk. Many companions who began with us do not seem to be around anymore. But You are still here, and that is all I need to know. Please don’t let go of my hand. It sometimes gets a little foggy, and I don’t want to get lost. I hear Your voice lighting the path before me, and I hear Your voice whispering behind me where to step. This journey would be impossible without You.
Even as I follow You I am in danger of stumbling, yet You are right here to lift me from the ground. You are always near to correct what goes wrong. Thank You.
We are not alone in this walk…I sense opponents lurking in the shadows. It encourages me to know that I am with the One who is stronger and greater than all who would come against me. Turning back out of fear is out of the question.
Truly You have made known to me the path of life, and I cannot imagine any greater joy than being in Your Presence. May each footstep be continually ordered by You, and may each portion of our journey bring us closer together. When we reach the end—and I finally see my Companion—may the nearness that has been built by our journey cause You to let go of my hand…
And lift me in Your arms to bring me home.
