Wrong Way

Rarely have I ever honked my horn driving down the road, but yesterday I was met by a car going the wrong way down a one-way street. This car was not in my lane; I was not in danger of any type of collision. It was, however, headed straight toward a line of cars behind me. So I did it…I broke my horn silence.

Some live to make noise, to rock boats, to stir pots. Some are like me, trying our best to smoothly slide through life without raising our voice over a whisper unless it is required. I must say after the vivid illustration I was given yesterday…when it is required for someone to speak up, it is imperative that we do so.

Does this mean that I tail behind people driving in a way that I may not agree with, annoying them with my criticism? Does this mean that I roll down my windows and yell at all who may be going too slow or too fast? No. However, when a dangerous situation is in the making, and others’ lives are in the balance—my silence equals guilt.

Does this mean that all who are in earshot will respond correctly? Does this mean that just because I speak up, people will listen and do what is right? No. But the response of others isn’t my responsibility.

The watchman blows the trumpet when danger is near. If we see others going the wrong way—hitched up to sin and travelling toward death at full speed—and we choose to not blow the horn, we are partially to blame for any wreckage.

Father, I thank You for the visual yesterday. I ask You for increased courage to speak up when I see others going the wrong way. I ask You for the words to say that may spare lives for eternity, and for favor with those who hear. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
