Set Apart

“Therefore, ‘Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord…’”

When you watch TV shows and movies about teenagers, the plot tends to center around one who doesn’t fit in, one who is different from everyone else. Why? Because this appeals to most teenagers. Does anyone really feel like they were born in the right place, with a natural fit-in mentality? If you were, I’m happy for you.

There are song lyrics describing the search to find our place; there are books that help us pinpoint our personality with quizzes—showing us where we are supposed to belong. I am just going to be honest: spending time trying to fit who you are into someone else’s label may not be what the Lord intended.

I say this from experience. I recently had a conversation with a woman of God, whom the Lord blessed with tremendous wisdom. I poured on her the occasional anxiety of being 38 years old and still not knowing what I want to be when I grow up…still not knowing my place, where I fit. Of course, I believe the Lord ordained the conversation, because soon after I felt the sweetest peace that the only place that I am “supposed to” belong is in His Presence.

“Come out from them and be separate” has rolled over and over in my spirit this morning.

Can we just stop trying to fit in? We weren’t created to blend in with the world.

Father, I know that we are to be set apart, consecrated unto You for Your purpose and plan. Sometimes it is hard, feeling different from everyone around us. Please give us the courage we need to stand up and stand out...so that You can be seen more clearly. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
