My Cup Runneth Over

“Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.”

Have you ever been pouring yourself a glass of tea or something and had one of those not paying attention moments? Pretty soon everything in the vicinity is enjoying your tea right along with you.

You don’t have to be a deep thinker to understand the “runneth over” concept. You do, however, have to have faith to just let it happen. Why? Do you like spills? Do you enjoy things getting a little beyond your grasp of control? Most would say no.

We typically like to be able to contain things, to be able to handle them how we deem necessary. The beautiful problem is that we serve a God of abundance, One who isn’t intimidated by our “containers.”

Sometimes, I think we long for the abundance—the overflow of all that God wants to pour on us—but we don’t know how to receive it. We are so accustomed to a life of “enough to get by” that we subconsciously refuse an outpouring. Almost as if we feel guilty living under the downpour of His anointing, favor, and blessing.

Here’s the deal: when we allowed the Son to take our place, receiving the punishment of our sins, He allowed us to take a place at the King’s table. We have been seated with Him! If we are trying to wait until we deserve it before we enjoy the meal, we are going to starve.

Our cups will never be deep or wide enough to contain all that He longs to give—so we shouldn’t try to stop them from running over with His Presence. (Let's just make sure we keep them clean with obedience.)

I want everyone in the vicinity to enjoy my Jesus right along with me.

Scripture to read:

Psalm 23:5

Ephesians 3:20

2 Samuel 9:1-13

Ephesians 2:6

Malachi 3:6-12

Joel 2:19

Matthew 23:26

Father, You are higher and deeper than I can ever imagine. Don’t let me try and fit You into a container that I can handle. I want more than I can contain. Fill me up to spill level, Lord. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
