The Journey

“At the LORD's command they encamped, and at the LORD's command they set out.”

I am absolutely fascinated by the journey of Israel through the wilderness in this context: the cloud covering the Tabernacle by day…and its appearance of fire by night. They didn’t move before the cloud moved. They stopped when it stopped.

The Tabernacle was the portable Temple, the dwelling place of the manifest Presence of God. His Presence made the journey with them, and they followed His lead.

“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?”

When we are delivered out of Egypt, may we never dare to think that we can make this journey on our own. May we never take a step without His Presence leading the way. Granted, Israel was not the best example to us in how to walk in complete obedience. So who do we look to for direction?

We look to Jesus. We look to the One who is the manifest Presence of God Himself, and we follow Him. He didn’t say or do anything unless it was what His Father wanted. He didn’t move camp until it was time. He knew when to set His face toward Jerusalem, knowing His time was nearing. He didn’t aimlessly wander around, but followed where the Spirit led Him. How much more should we?

How often do we try to move camp and expect His covering to follow us? That’s not at all how it works! We may know where our end destination is, but we are clueless about the path that we must travel to get there. May His Word be the lamp for our feet and the light for our path—the cloud and fire leading us day and night. Let us become more sensitive to His leading and His voice, so that we are aware of His timing.

Don’t let your journey become a lifetime of wandering in the wilderness—choose to follow Him. He is the only One who knows the way, and His Presence will make the journey with you.

Scripture to read:

Numbers 9:15-23

Isaiah 4: 5-6

1 Corinthians 3:16

Luke 9:51-53

Psalm 119:105

John 12:49

Lord, to You I commit each step of this journey. Please lead and don’t let me lag behind. Don’t let me try to run ahead of You. You know the way, and I will follow You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
