The Author

July 10, 2017

“All the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be.”

Psalm 139:16b

I watched a movie the other night that involved a writer who was yet to be published.  A publishing company did, finally, show some interest in her novel, yet they required some revision—some help—to make the work better.  Rather than selling them her book to be done with what they wanted, she plunged herself into a mulligan attempt…a re-write.

The Author and Finisher of our faith has already written from the Prologue to the “The End” page in our life story.  Why in the world do we think we have the right to offer any criticism or revision whatsoever?  His pen has carved a fearfully and wonderfully made life for each one of us (despite our circumstances and what we think the appearance of “wonderfully” should be).  What makes us think we should have a say in the final draft?

Now I am in no way insinuating that when we complain about certain aspects of certain chapters, or wonder why He used specific fonts on us, that He feels like He needs to do a re-write to please us.  He is not at our beck and call.  We are not our own, but He has already purchased the rights to us with His blood.  It’s His story; we just get to be characters.  No.  He doesn’t go back to the drawing board because we don’t like what He wrote.  But He does commit to never running out of pens when our choices have acted like an eraser to make our own “corrections.”

“A just man falls seven times, and rises up again.”  I may stumble into a chapter that He let me write on my own…but thanks be to God that He doesn’t just close the book on me.

If you look around at your life, and you realize that you have tried to take the pen out of His hand—I challenge you to surrender it.  I challenge you to let Him re-write your story.  He didn’t promise that it would be a fairy tale, but that we have eternity to live happily ever after with Him.  Trust Him with the details.  Trust Him with each turn of the page.

Praise God, He stays with His finished, yet unfinished, work to The End.

Scripture to read:

Psalm 139

Hebrews 12:2

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Malachi 3:16-18

Psalm 40:7-8

Proverbs 24:16

Acts 2:38

Hebrews 10:14

Father, I trust You to write as You know how to do what is best.  You see the big picture, and You know the end from the beginning.  Thank You that You don’t leave me to figure it out on my own.  May the pen always stay in Your hand. In Jesus’ Name.  Amen.
