Without a Vision

“Without a vision, the people perish.”

This verse keeps rising to the surface of my heart.  It’s one of those that I used to hear quoted a lot, but I didn’t fully understand what it meant.  (Just a side note:  how often do we do that?  When I am with young people, I like to draw Scripture out of them.  Then I like to make sure that they understand what they confidently quote.  If we can hold a sword, yet not understand how to wield it, we may just be dangerously swinging away.)

“Man can live about forty days without food, about three days without water, about eight minutes without air...but only for one second without hope.” – Hal Lindsey

What does it mean to perish without a vision?  In a different translation it is stated that, “Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint.”  In essence, when we don’t know God’s purpose for our lives, discipline is thrown out the window.

We tend to operate better when we know the point.  If there is a goal line, we are more likely to keep running towards it.  If there is a prize, our eyes tend to stay fixed on it.  It hurts me when I see people drowning in attitudes of “What’s the point?”  If there is no revelation, we so easily cast off restraint.

So how do we find revelation?  How do we get a vision?  “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”  How can you possibly find your purpose without asking the One who made you?

I dare you to determine in your heart to seek Him.  Not to seek your purpose.  We worship what we fix our eyes on…keep them on Jesus.  Delight yourself in Him, and let Him make your purpose evident as you sense His desires are overtaking yours.  Don’t allow life to become just survival—there is a point.  And His Name is Jesus.

Scripture to read:

Proverbs 29:18

Matthew 6:33

Hebrews 12:2

Matthew 14:22-33

Jeremiah 29:10-14

Prayer:

Lord, I don’t want to wander aimlessly, just using up oxygen in my short time on this earth.  I know that You know Your plans, so please line me up with them.  In Jesus’ Name.  Amen.
