I confess that I am not a fishing guru. There will probably be some terminology that I botch, just saying. But as I waited to know what the Lord would have me pen this morning, I saw in my heart a hook being lowered in front of me.

What has the ability to hook you? What bait draws you to the surface for a bite? My husband knows what kind of lure to use to catch certain types of fish. What catches you? The more aware you are of your weakness, the more likely you are to elude temptation.

Think about it, not all fish that are caught are kept. Some are let back in, caught only for the sport of it. Some are caught to be devoured. But even the fish that is set free has been injured and taken out of the game for a little while. Not all temptation that is succumbed to will lead you to certain death, but it will definitely take you out of play momentarily. Is it worth it? Is the thought of your being able to do what your flesh wants to do for a little while worth your testimony?

I also offer this thought, somewhat of a tangent: have you ever felt the Lord has set you as a lure to bait the enemy? Have you ever felt that you were a worm on a hook, and every devil in the vicinity was closing in for the kill? I have actually. And then the Lord took me to His Word and showed me that rather than me chasing and defeating one enemy at a time, He has the ability to draw multiple to me to be crushed under my feet at once. Wow.

We can spend all of our days going from one craving to another, one temporary satisfaction to the next…or we can choose to make our flesh shut up and be free to help others swimming toward destruction.

We can also spend our days running from attacks of the enemy, hiding out in fear…or we can present our bodies as living sacrifices to the Lord to use us however He chooses. If it is His will for me to be a lure that causes the enemy to step into an ambush, let it be, Lord. If I appear defeatable to the enemy, yet I know in my heart that I am more than a conqueror—come what may, I will not hide.

Walk in integrity and avoid the enemy’s bait. Walk in integrity and let the Lord crush the enemy under your feet.

Scripture to read:

Hebrews 12:1 Exodus 14 Romans 8:36-39 Romans 12:1

1 Corinthians 10:13 Micah 4:9-13 Psalm 25:21

1 John 5:16-17 Romans 16:20 Psalm 139:23-24

John 8:34 Proverbs 24:11 Matthew 6:13

Father, search me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting. Show me what would lure me out of Your will, and lead me not into temptation. Keep me from evil, and crush the enemy with my life, I pray. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
