“…teach me Your ways so I may know You…”
I am definitely a people watcher. It fascinates me to see how different people are, how we each have specific ways of doing things. I will just go ahead and throw myself under the bus: I have probably the least efficient personality when it comes to doing a task. Not sure why, but for some reason my brain takes me down the scenic route to get something done. (This is one reason I don’t like to clean the house when my husband is at home…because he is the most efficient person I know, and he could do it a whole lot faster and better than me.)
Some have a “way” with people, while others have a “way” with finances. There is typically a gifted path that we can each walk down that seems natural to us, while it is a foreign route to others. We have our ways. We have our roads to get to a destination that another person never would have chosen. Often this is how we are connected to friends and other relationships: they are able to understand our ways, and possibly share some.
Our way of doing things can become dangerous when we allow it to trump the Lord’s way. His way is and always will be perfect, and it is a refuge for the righteous. So if we choose to become set in our ways, and refuse to walk down His, we easily stumble.
I think we sometimes genuinely want His will…but we want to get to it our way. We want to know what He wants, but then make it happen on our own. I want to genuinely cry out as Moses did, “If You are pleased with me, teach me Your ways so I may know You and continue to find favor with You.” We must be taught. We must be willing to relinquish our methods and choose His.
We are to prepare the way of the Lord, so may we never become set in our own.
Scripture to read:
Exodus 33:13 Psalm 86:11
Psalm 18:30-32 Psalm 25:4
Psalm 103:7 Isaiah 40:1-5
Proverbs 10:29 Psalm 16:11
O God, teach me Your ways. Show me Your paths. You have made known to me the paths of life, and You will fill me with joy in Your Presence. Don’t ever let me think that I can walk my own road to get to Your will. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
