I hope that I am not the only one who, while attempting to clean my house, starts multiple things…yet rarely finishes any of them. Moving from one room to the next to get something, I become distracted and begin something brand new. My attention span threatens any completion of a task, and if anyone dares talk to me while I am in the middle of something—I get borderline rude, because I know I can’t change focus.

I don’t know how many books I have that have been started, yet not finished. I remember having to read Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in high school—rather than reading it, I read the beginning and the end and then listened to people talk about the middle! (This is getting really sad and convicting, just watching myself admit all of this.) I just pray that someone can relate.

I desperately pray that my spirit does not mimic my flesh in this case at all! I long to be able to fall at Jesus’ feet one day, knowing that I finished the race in a dead sprint. Knowing that I didn’t give up when it got difficult to keep the faith. Knowing that it wasn’t my strength that kept me going. I want to finish strong.

Aware of the fact that my weakness displays His strength, I choose to let God use my inch-long attention span to show that He finishes what He starts. He saved me, and He has kept me so far. He has the ability to take my hand and squeeze it when I would become distracted, not letting me go until my focus is reset. How amazing is my Savior!

The thing I love about races is the competition. You know God knows what He is doing by letting us know that there is a crown waiting for those who endure the trials, a crown for those who love Him. We are prize-minded people. Here’s the thing: I am not racing against you, hoping you fall, hoping I beat you by a long-shot. I am racing against my flesh. I must daily train and pray that my flesh is left behind to watch my spirit take the lead.

He is our prize. He is our reward. He is all the crown that I want. Lord, You started this with us…carry us to the finish line.

Scripture to read:

James 1:12

Philippians 1:6

1 Corinthians 9:24-25

Hebrews 12:1-3

2 Corinthians 12:9-10

Father, I fix my eyes on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of my faith. I trust You to finish what You began in me. I will stay at Your feet, on the potter’s wheel, on the threshing floor, until You are done with me. In Jesus’ Name I remain. Amen.
